The blind draw found a few nuts this year.

Several of the region’s best baseball teams got favorable draws when the baseball sectional pairings were announced Tuesday, with a handful of tantalizing matchups saved for potential championship games.

One exception? Sectional 2, where Crown Point and LaPorte will face each other in the opening round next week. Making things even tougher, the winner of that game would get either Chesterton or Michigan City — Chesterton is a dangerous team in the postseason with two aces, Jordan Peterson and Jake Post.

On the opposite side of the bracket sits Portage, which will face host Merrillville. The winner of that game will get Valparaiso or Hobart.

The rest of the draw was kinder to most of the region’s top teams. In Sectional 1, Lake Central has a first-round bye and — if it can avenge last year’s loss to host Munster — is likely to see Highland in the final.

Clark, as usual, is a heavy favorite in 3A Sectional 17, having to get through Lew Wallace and host Gavit to get to a final against either Hammond or Roosevelt. Andrean got a relatively tough draw with Kankakee Valley in the first round, but the 59ers swept the season series by the combined score of 34-16.

In 2A, the loaded Sectional 33 has Wheeler and host Hanover Central each getting byes and on opposite ends of the bracket. But Hanover could have to get past a solid Bishop Noll squad to have a shot at avenging an early regular-season loss to Wheeler.

In Sectional 34, host Boone Grove and Hebron are on opposite sides of the bracket, with the Wolves getting a bye. Hebron beat Boone earlier in the year.

In 1A, Whiting has a bye in Sectional 49, while Westville and host South Central could meet in the second round of Sectional 50.
