KOUTS — The goal from the start of the season for Jasen Egolf and the Hebron boys track and field team was simply to win the conference title. After winning the round robin title last year, Hanover Central defeated the Hawks in the conference meet and Hebron wanted to avenge the loss in a big way. Hebron held off Hanover Central 130-116.5 to capture the Porter County Conference title.
Hanover Central, the winner of the last six consecutive titles battled hard, but the Hawks came out with a “team effort” to defeat their conference rival.
“We set out the season wanting to repeat as the round robin winner and to win conference and the hard work and determination of the team was the difference tonight,” said Hebron coach Mike DeFries. “We truly had a team effort with everyone contributing to the victory and it is well deserved amongst each and every one of them.”
The leader for Hebron was Jasen Egolf as he captured victories in the 800-meter run (2:07.09), the 1,600-meter run (4:31.43) as part of the 4 x 800 meter relay team, and fourth place in the 3,200-meter run.
“I didn’t run my best tonight and I think the heat had something to do with all of our performances,” Egolf said. “But I felt good in the 800 and 1,600 and struggled with a migraine running the 3,200 but none the less, this is a big win for our entire team and we are extremely excited to have captured the conference title.”
Hanover Central got a solid performance from Derek De St Jean, who captured first in the discus (174-11) and the shot put (55-00.25)
In third place was Washington Township and its standout was Brandon Hogge, who captured wins in the 100-meter dash (11.45) and the 200-meter dash with a new meet record time of 22.73.
“I wanted to win the 200,” Hogge said. “I have been focusing my efforts to that event and to capture it with a new conference meet record makes it that much more special. It has got me looking forward to the upcoming sectionals to see if I can improve.”
The conference title is the Hawks’ 14 overall title, two behind conference leader Hanover Central.
Kouts senior Bruce Mosier was honored with the mental attitude award.
“This award is a tribute to my family, God, and my teammates,” Mosier said, “I am extremely honored with this award.”
