Senior sweep for Lake Central

Lake Central track coach Ron Fredrick had nothing but glowing accolades for his senior track athletes on Tuesday as the Indians won their fourth consecutive Duneland Conference crown.
“This is our fourth in a row, our seniors have won this all four years, that is quite an accomplishment,” Fredrick said. “I can’t say enough about Isis (Thomas), she performed incredibly. Anna (Kacius), Alana (Eatinger) and Rylee, what can I say about them? When Rylee was a junior, she blew out her ACL in the long jump. She came back and ran her leg of the 4x100 with a torn ACL.”
The cupboard will be far from bare, however, for Fredrick and a group of underclassmen that helped the Indians win again. Freshman Parriss Bettis was named co-MVP in the running events with her win in the 200-meter and also helped the Indians win the 400 relay along with Andrea Alvarez, Kaitlyn Moricz and Sullivan. Moricz also took top honors in the long jump. Freshman Brooke Lambert won the pole vault and LeVisa Evans took top honors in the high jump.
Valparaiso junior and co-MVP Katelyn DeVries won the 3,200, the 1,600 and helped the Vikings’ 3,200 relay team along with Lauren Bigger, Blaney Keough and Annaliese Trapp. Keough also won the 800.
As expected, the field MVP was Portage senior Tori Bliss. Bliss shattered the conference discus record by almost 10 feet with a throw of 146-1. Bliss, however, still trails the Portage school record of 157-1. She also set a conference meet record in the shot with a throw of 49-8.75.
“I’m striving to get better on my technique everyday,” Bliss said. “That was my personal best in the shot, two 49s today. I’m just looking for a level of consistency. I feel I’m throwing the shot better right now that I did at state last year.”
Her Portage teammate, Kristy Evan, won the 100 meters with a time of 12.50. Merrillville’s Jalessa Holmes took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.98. Stephanie Fisher of Chesterton took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a winning time of 46.42. Fisher and Holmes were neck-and-neck in the 100-meter finals.
The Portage 400 relay team of Evans, Arrissa Salas, Jade McKnight and Ashley Smith had a winning time of 50.39. The Crown Point 1,600 relay team of Bailey Beckham, Megan Gulvas, Whitney Mitchell and MaKenzi Morris won with a time of 4:06.04.
