CROWN POINT — The Boone Grove Boys’ Golf Invite was dominated by the home team, as the Wolves placed three of their golfers in the top four overall to win the meet.

Junior Drake Devereux was the individual medalist, using two birdies to finish with a 37 on nine holes at Lakes of the Four Seasons Golf Club.

“That’s a pretty low round for me,” he said. “I felt like I was in the zone for all nine holes. I did my best to keep hitting the ball down the middle, even if I had to sacrifice some distance. I had to keep the ball in play.”

Devereux was joined by Rick Gayda (40) and Tyler Nicol (41) at the top of the leaderboard, as Boone Grove finished 13 strokes ahead of second place Hanover.

“I’m somewhat happy with our performance,” said Boone Grove head coach Gary King. “But we still have a lot to improve on our total team performance. I think our top three are going to be solid, but we need to get that fourth and fifth spot shored up in the next week or two.”

For Nicol, a state finalist last season, the meet added to the season’s frustration.

“Everything in my game is OK except my putting,” Nicol said between practice shots on the putting green after the meet ended. “I’m working on it, but it’s been like this since the start of the season.”

Hanover turned in the most balanced performance of the day with all four scorers finishing in the mid-40s — Trevor Toms (44), Charlie Sawyer (45), Zach Sheehy (46) and Nick Plavsa (47).

“We didn’t play our best,” said Hanover coach Jerry Kienzle. “Our strategy was to stay short and play under the pins. Our kids are getting more distance on their shots.

“Here (at LOFS), your ball will take a big bounce and roll, and that’s where the out-of-bounds spots hurt you. We need to work on that more.”

Merrillville’s Malik Muhammad also finished with a 40 to tie Gayda for second place. Other strong scores came from Hobart’s Garrett Bianchi (42), Wheeler’s Jordan Long (43) and Lowell’s Mac Besse (44).
