HOBART — Hobart was in a perfect position to make the Northwest Crossroads Conference race interesting if they could have knocked off visiting Andrean on Thursday.

And after three innings, the Brickies were making some noise and playing like one of the top teams in the NCC against arguably the best team in conference.

But as the raindrops started to come down, the 59ers were pouring in runs to the tune of 10 in the fourth inning, en route to a 13-3 blowout on the road.

With five conference games, all this week, Andrean set a goal to win all five and the 59ers are one win away from reaching their goal.

Andrean (12-3, 7-1 NCC) jumped out early and often against Hobart’s starting pitcher Phil Madvek and led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning. But a leadoff single by Bobby Steele set up Jake Trezak’s monster home run over the center-field fence that traveled all of 410 feet to cut the lead to one. It was his second on the season.

But the Brickies’ celebration was short-lived as Andrean brought 14 batters to the plate and produced five hits and 10 runs. The outburst gave starting pitcher Mike Hanchar more than enough run support as the big lefty was solid on the mound for the 59ers the rest of the way in the five-inning game.

Cody Haver, Nick Tobye and Kiney each reached base twice and scored twice in the inning.

Michael Brosseau, who finished 4-for-4, had a pair of singles in the deciding fourth inning for Andrean to go along with three of his game high four RBI. He also scored the game-winning run on an error.

“They helped us out a little bit in that inning,” 59ers coach Dave Pishkur said. “A couple of errors here and some good hits there are usually a combination of big innings. It was nice”

Errors plagued Hobart (10-7, 5-3 NCC) throughout the game, but none more critically than in the fourth inning. The Brickies committed three in the inning and four for the game.

“Our guys have been resilient all year and it’s a lot to ask yourself when you put yourself in situations like we were doing today and to think that you are going to consistently fight your way out of it,” said Hobart coach Bob Glover.

“We’ve done it plenty of times this year, but we really need to get to a point where we are not doing it on an every-game basis and expecting to come back and make up for it. Today we made a whole lot of mistakes.”

Andrean played the game a bit banged up with three players suffering injuries either before the game or during the game.

Nick Tobye got his first start behind the plate for Andrean and Pishkur liked what he saw enough to pencil him again at catcher for today’s game against Kankakee Valley.
