ST. JOHN — Lake Central’s lineup struggled in three previous meetings against Michigan City pitcher Peyton Webb.

In Thursday’s Duneland Athletic Conference game, it was Webb who struggled to get the Indians out.

The junior lasted only one inning — allowing seven runs on as many hits — before giving way to the Wolves’ number three pitcher, Allison Martinez, who was pitching for the first time this season.

“We’ve seen (Webb) three times (going back to last year), so it helped us a lot,’’ said LC catcher Sam Terry, who went 3-for-3, including a walk, and drove in five runs in the Indians’ 10-0 victory in five innings.

“We knew what she threw and we knew how she threw, so we knew what to expect.’’

Terry is hitting .544 (31 of 57) this spring and has been on a tear in her final season at Lake Central.

She cracked an RBI double, a two-run triple and a two-run single to lead the Indians (14-4, 6-1) who jumped all over Webb in the first inning for three runs and tacked on five more in the second to make it 8-0.

Kaitlyn Ranieri drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly.

“Before the game, we talked about controlling what you can control,’’ Indians coach Jeff Sherman said.

“We told them: ‘You can’t control the weather. You can’t control the field conditions, but you can control the way you play.’ ’’

A message on a grease board hanging in LC’s dugout reminded the players: “Control what you can control.’’

The Indians did exactly that.

They ignored the miserable weather, poor field conditions, and just went out and took care of business — pounding Webb and the Wolves (5-4, 4-4).

“You’ve got to give Lake Central credit, they hit the ball,’’ Michigan City coach Candy Feare said. “They saw her (Webb) the first time around. They timed her and they hit her. They came to play today. They’re a good team — solid all-around. I don’t know what it is, but we’ve never really played well here in my six years.’’

Lake Central freshman Lily Del Toro (4-2) picked up the shutout win. She allowed only two hits, fanned eight and walked one.
