Boys Basketball: Bowman put on probation after incident

Bowman Academy was placed on probation through the 2012-2013 season after its team participated in a bench-clearing incident in a game against Detroit Consortium High School in the Dorian Dawkins Show Your Heart Memorial Classic in Saginaw, Mich.
Officials stopped the game, which took place on Jan. 14, with Bowman leading 40-27. All the players were ejected, according to a story in the Detroit Free Press.
The Indiana High School Athletic Association issued a statement that called the probation a “severe warning” and it noted “future, similar incidents will not be tolerated.” The game was also forfeited by Bowman.
Bowman issued a statement that said it had suspended players for the incident, though it didn’t say who was suspended or for how long. The Dorian Dawkins tournament director also said the officials were “not up to par” for the tournament.
Consortium forfeited two games after the bench clearing incident.
Bowman coach Marvin Rea told the Free Press in a story on Jan. 17 that his team wasn’t “forfeiting games” and that he wasn’t “suspending players.”
The release said there was a “misquote” regarding disciplinary action that Bowman was taking though it didn’t single out the story in the Free Press.
Neither Rea nor IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox returned a phone call for this story.
In October of 2010, Bowman was reprimanded by the IHSAA for allowing a player who wasn’t enrolled to work out at its gym during the summer. Bowman plays Bishop Luers on Saturday.
