HEBRON — In the 89 years of the Porter County Conference Tournament, no school has been able to do accomplish what the Boone Grove girls did on Saturday.

With a thrilling 44-40 victory over Kouts, the Class 2A No. 7 Wolves became the only team in PCC history, boys or girls, to win four straight PCC Tournament titles.

“That’s pretty cool,” Boone coach Candy Wilson said. “We have a very competitive conference.”

Senior Brittany Shaffer is the only Wolves player who has been part of all four of them.

“It’s been a great experience,” Shaffer said. “We’ve had a great team all four years. I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with anybody else.”

This year’s was the 40th playing of the girls tournament. The win was Boone Grove’s 14th.

But it didn’t come easy. The Wolves (16-1) trailed 20-17 at the half but forced seven third-quarter turnovers to regain the lead and take a 32-27 advantage into the final period. They led by six, 37-31, after a Julie Hogg bucket with 4:32 to play before Kouts rallied.

The Fillies (11-7) went on a 7-0 run and took a 38-37 lead on a pair of Lexi Sipple free throws with 2:13 left. But another key basket by Hogg, a layup with 1:48 to play, gave Boone a 39-38 lead, and the Wolves held on in a frenetic finish.

“Not many people expected us to compete with Boone Grove,” Kouts coach Ron Kobza said. “Our seniors showed the hearts of champions. They never give up.”

Paige Aguilera, who had a huge second half defensively, scored 12 to lead the Wolves. Shaffer added 11, all in the first half.

Sipple scored 14 to pace the Fillies, while Jenna Jessen added nine.
