Girls Basketball: Trojans stifle, stun Wolves

CHESTERTON — Generally, coaches know their team is going to give up points. Sure, they’d love to hold the opponent scoreless, but the reality is it just doesn’t happen.

But Chesterton did it for one quarter Friday night. And the Trojans did it against the state’s No. 8 team in Class 4A.

Trailing by 10 at halftime, Chesterton shut out Michigan City in the third quarter and held the Wolves to just seven second-half points en route to a stunning 45-38 Duneland Conference victory.

“What you think about is trying to be as good as you can defensively,” Trojans coach Jack Campbell said. “But that was a great performance in the second half.”

On top of the staunch defense, Chesterton senior guard Lindsay Gorman heated up from long range, draining two big 3-pointers and another long 2-pointer in the fourth quarter as the Trojans (6-8, 3-7 DAC) pulled ahead and then held on.

Gorman finished with a team-high 20 points. And she admitted she was feeling it from the perimeter in the fourth quarter.

“I was,” Gorman said. “I just wanted us to get the win. And my teammates were finding me open.”

The Wolves (13-3, 8-2 DAC) built a 10-point halftime lead behind the inside play of 6-foot junior forward Keshyana Cooper, who had 15 first-half points. But her touches were limited in the second half, and she was held without a shot in Michigan City’s scoreless third quarter before finishing with 20 points to go along with 19 rebounds.

Wolves coach Mike Megyese said it was a simple matter of his players failing to get the ball to their hot hand.

“We hurt ourselves,” Megyese said. “Chesterton deserved to win. We couldn’t have played worse in the second half.”
