Girls Volleyball: Harvest Christian continues to roll, tops Luther North

By the time a team advances to a sectional championship game they are usually starting to feel the pressure build. It would seem that pressure would be even more intense for a school playing in the IHSA playoffs for the first time, but pressure doesn’t seem to be in Harvest Christian’s vocabulary. The Lions continued to roll through the postseason on Thursday night, capturing the Class 1A sectional title at Westminster Christian with a 25-17, 25-12 victory over Luther North.
“I don’t think we are feeling the pressure yet,” said Harvest Christian coach Kim Floyd. “I don’t want to say it’s because we are naive. I just think it’s all so new to us that we haven’t let it get to us. We are just enjoying each moment along the way. It’s hard to put into words what a great feeling this has been. It’s just been monumentous for our school and for our team.”
The Lions pounced on the Wildcats early, scoring the first eight points behind the serving of Jade Martinez, who had a pair of aces during the run. However the Lions fell into a bit of a lull after the fast start. They committed nine unforced errors in the first game the as Luther North climbed back to within 12-8 at one point. Still the Lions were abl;e to over come the sloppy play. Back to back aces by Sydney Doby streyched the Lions lead to 16-8. The Wildcats got no closer than five points the rest of the way. Doby added a pair of kills down the stretch in game one and finished the match with a game-high eight kills.
“We hit a little bump in the road,” said Doby. “But we just had to get re-focused mentally. Every one was so hyped up coming into the game. It’s just been crazy around school.”
The Lions trailed 9-8 in game two before going on an 11-0 run behind the serving of Kali Cramer, who had three aces during that stretch and finished with five on the night. She also had eight assists and six digs.
“This is a big deal for us,” said Cramer. “It is something we have dreamed of for a long time.”
Kim Floyd led the Lions in assists with 10. Erica Manusos had a team high 12 digs.
Harvest improves to 25-11 and now advances to the Hanover River Ridge Super-Sectional. They are just three wins from winning the state title.
“It’s a nice record,” said Floyd. “But 28-11 would be even better.”
