Angels take down Providence

Volleyball powers Joliet Catholic and Providence matched considerable skill in an East Suburban Catholic showdown Tuesday night in Joliet, but home court didn’t necessarily give the Angels an advantage.
“The girls have not played well at home all season, and I think it was time for us to play well at home,’’ Joliet Catholic coach Christine Scheibe said. “They had a focus tonight to come out and put themselves in control of the conference.’’
Joliet Catholic recorded a 25-21, 25-18 victory with a vocal student section lending a psychological hand to the conference-leading Angels (25-3, 7-0).
“We came out this time and we really wanted to get something done,’’ middle hitter Gianna Lincoln said. “This showed how much we really wanted it. We didn’t want to go into three games.’’
Joliet Catholic started Game 2 with a 7-1 run and built 16-4 and 17-5 leads before Providence closed the gap to 18-10.
“I liked the way we served,’’ Scheibe said of the second game. “We were serving aggressive. They were struggling a little bit passing. And Morgan Reardon was big on her kills.’’
Joliet Catholic got key contributions from Reardon (7 kills, 8 digs), Mallory Mangun (8 digs, 7 assists), Jillian Hickey (13 digs), Lincoln (6 kills, block), Hailey Pennington (5 kills) and Emily Schoenstedt (10 assists).
“We were just so ready,’’ Schoenstedt said. “When you play a rival like that, there’s a vibe the whole team brings to each other, to win and beat them in our home gym.’’
Providence (21-6, 5-1) was led by Krista Brakauskas (19 assists), Alyssa Podwell (5 kills, 2 blocks), Emma Sweeney (10 digs), Nora Mitros (6 digs) and Katie Urchell (6 digs).
“Our passing was a little off and that’s the name of the game,’’ Providence coach Rachel Ellingson said. “If you can’t pass and run your offense, you’re not going to be able to put the ball down. They passed very well and got some great kills on us.’’
Joliet Catholic faces Benet on Thursday, with its final ESCC match Tuesday against Marist.
“We don’t have an easy match the rest of the season,’’ Scheibe said.
