Codie Morey of Richards said she was looking for a change. Karliegh Krchmery of Eisenhower felt that she just didn’t fit in.

Teammates at Marist during their freshman and sophomore seasons, last year the duo transferred to their respective schools.

Today as seniors, they’re shining stars, which was very much in evidence during No. 7 Richards’ 25-22, 25-21 South Suburban Red victory Thursday in Blue Island.

Morey had 10 assists, eight kills, six digs and three aces, while Kara Rockey (15 digs), Sam Kusta (7 digs), Allison Stazak (15 assists), Megan Albon (6 kills) and Taylor Adelman (4 blocks) were also key for the Bulldogs (8-3, 8-2), who are on top of the conference.

Krchmery had five kills, eight digs and five aces, Emily Arenas 16 assists and Michelle Garcia five digs for Eisenhower (15-10, 3-6).

The friendly competition between Morey and Krchmery reached its peak in Game 1.

Her team trailing 14-13, Morey went to the service line for the Bulldogs and fired three aces. She also had two assists during a 5-0 streak.

Moments later, Krchmery went to the line for Eisenhower and fired three aces. She also put down a kill from the back row during a 5-0 streak.

“It’s a lot of fun, always a friendly competition,” Krchmery said. “We looked forward to it way from the beginning of the year, even during summer league when we played each other.”

The clutch player of the match for Richards was Albon. The sophomore outside hitter had three kills during a 5-0 streak to end Game 1, and put a crucial kill between two blockers for Richards’ 24th point in Game 2.

“I got some nice sets, thanks to Codie,” Albon said. “It was really adrenaline rushing there. I just worked as hard as I could and put all I had into it.”

Morey is relishing the chance to help lead Richards to a conference title. Her 2010 season as a Bulldog was cut short by the IHSA after 20 matches due to a residency issue.

“It was very tough,” Morey said. “But I knew that they were out there and I cheered them on from the bench. It was very nice to come back this year.”
