Joliet Catholic streaks past Hinsdale Central

After suffering its first losses of the season Saturday, Joliet Catholic regained that winning formula Monday night.

It didn’t take long for No. 5 Joliet Catholic to start another winning streak.

The Angels had their season-opening 17-match streak snapped at Saturday’s Asics Challenge with back-to-back losses to Newport Harbor (Calif.) and Marist.

Joliet Catholic beat Huntley to finish seventh at Mother McAuley, but the Angels didn’t waste any time while hosting Hinsdale Central Monday night in a nonconference match. Loyola-bound Kelly Feigh had 12 kills in Joliet Catholic’s 25-16, 25-12 win.

The Devils (11-9) had only one kill in the second set by Sanne Hilbrich. The Angels (19-2) outblocked Hinsdale 4-0 in the second set and 6-2 for the match in a dominating performance that also included six kills by Morgan Reardon and four kills from Lauren Robertson.

Dominique Millette led the Devils with three kills and Michigan-bound Ally Davis had two kills.

Feigh had seven kills in the second set and five in a row late in the match when Feigh gave the Angels a 22-10 lead. Robertson ended a six-point point run with an ace and after two Devils points, Feigh responded again with her final kill.

“This definitely felt good,” Feigh said. “We played more as a team today than we did over the weekend. We definitely needed it.”

Both teams will compete in St. Charles East’s Mizuno Cup starting Friday at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora. Joliet Catholic is the three-time tournament champion, but earned a second seed behind Benet and was placed in a pool with Neuqua Valley and Lockport. The Devils are in a pool with Leon (Fla.) and Muskego (Wis.).

“We’ve definitely been up and down lately, that’s for sure,” Davis said. “You can look at the scores and the teams we play, and the teams we have losses to. It’s definitely too early to throw in the towel and say we’re not going to come around.”

Hinsdale took a 4-3 lead and then tied the second set at 5 when the Angels scored 11 consecutive points. The run included three consecutive blocks, one each from Robertson, Reardon (two blocks) and Gianna Lincoln (two blocks).

Robertson and fellow setter Mallory Mangun had 11 assists each.

The Devils lost for the second time in three matches after suffering a 25-12, 25-10 defeat at St. Charles East Friday night.

“For us, when our hitting is on, our passing is off,” Davis said. “When our passing is on, our hitting is off.”

Shorter Joliet Catholic, which features only one 6-footer in Hailey Pennington, seemed to have little problem against the taller Devils with 6-2 Millette, 6-1 Davis and 6-1 Hilbrich. Katie Grabowski and Hilbrich had the only blocks for Hinsdale.
