Sandburg shuts down Plainfield Central

Sandburg coach Desi Vuillaume has confidence in his entire roster and will throw many different looks at an opponent. The Eagles’ depth is showing more and more late in the season.
Ashley Youngwirth scored for the second straight game Friday and the Eagles’ backline was strong even without star defender Carson Moesle. Sandburg recorded its 15th shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Plainfield Central in the opening round of the Lemont Cup.
“We’ve had a lot of bench players step up,” Vuillaume said. “The depth of this team allows us to do a lot of different things.”
Plainfield Central (8-9-1) had the better of play early as the Eagles (15-2-1) were a bit lackadaisical out of the gates in the wake of Thursday’s huge win over Homewood-Flossmoor.
The Wildcats nearly came up with an early goal. Julie Tamayo fired just wide on a good rush in the opening minute. Four minutes later, a Sandburg miscue in its own penalty area nearly resulted in an open-net chance for Central, but Sami Jensen could not strike a hopping ball cleanly and her shot went wide.
The Eagles cleaned up their play and took control, however, firing six shots on goal in the final 27 minutes of the half.
The fifth brought the first goal. Siobhan Mulvey made a strong rush down the right side and delivered a perfect cross to Youngwirth, who finished for her third goal of the season with 1:38 left in the half.
“It was a great cross and it was just there for me to put in,” Youngwirth said. “I’ve switched positions from the top to the outside and I’m a lot more comfortable there. It feels really good scoring in two straight games.”
The Eagles delivered the dagger with 2:20 left in the game as Central goalkeeper Janna Pascente (8 saves) could not handle Carly Katalinic’s corner kick. Sara Osoba collected the loose ball and found the open net.
Victoria Kappel made two saves to record the shutout for the Eagles.
Without Moesle, who’s being given a few days off to rest after what Vuillaume called a “rough game” with H-F, Paige Bendell moved to the back and turned in a strong effort.
Lemont 2, Hinsdale South 1 (SO): Wendy Mazur scored the equalizer with 1:17 left in the game for Lemont (13-3). The Indians won the shootout by a 3-0 margin, getting goals from Kelly Trojak, Elise Cody and Shannon Briggs. Jessica Koziol scored for Hinsdale South.
