Plainfield South, Minooka must wait for another day

The hard-fought girls soccer game Thursday between Southwest Prairie Conference rivals Plainfield South and Minooka had a little bit of everything – except a final score.
Just as regulation ended in a 3-3 tie and the officials were discussing overtime with the coaches, lightning appeared in the distance. A delay was soon followed by rain and more lightning, which led to the game being suspended.
Minooka coach Chris Brolley said it may be finished Friday before the Indians’ 6:30 p.m. Senior Night contest against East Aurora.
“We may just have to bump JV over to the small field and start at 4:30,’’ Brolley said. If not then, the game might be finished Tuesday or Wednesday.
Collisions were common in regulation as three Plainfield South players went down. Coach Kevin Allen said Ashley Taylor suffered a broken ankle, Alexis Mele had slight concussion symptoms and Alex Truhlar suffered a hyperextended knee.
“It’s part of the game,’’ Allen said of the injuries. “It’s part of the game. Ashley Taylor, the refs might have missed one. She definitely got the ball first. But it’s part of the game. You can’t really do too much about it.’’
“I preach to our girls to go for the ball,’’ Brolley said. “Obviously we’re not a dirty team. We’ve never had a game like this before. But in the end, injuries do happen.’’
Junior midfielder Alysha Alonzo scored all three goals for Minooka (6-8, 3-2), including two in the second half
to erase Plainfield South’s 3-1 lead. Becca Sutton had two assists and Colleen Lewis set up the game-tying goal with a corner kick.
“The whole team stepped it up,’’ Alonzo said. “We were being really intense and aggressive. Just some of the girls got hit and some of them went down. It’s just unlucky.’’
“I know we can score goals,’’ Brolley said. “I never get down on a game because we have so much talent up top. We can always put the ball in the back of the net. We just happen to have the wind the second half.’’
Kailyn Haski had two goals and an assist for Plainfield South (8-4-1, 2-2) and Kelsey Pruett’s rebound goal opened the scoring three minutes into the game. Haski netted her second goal with 27:25 left in the second half to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.
“We didn’t pressure them after we scored,’’ Allen said. “We just let them back in. We’re a young team so we’re struggling to put teams away.’’
