Mother McAuley blanks Marist

When Mother McAuley’s Kristina Biljan saw the Mighty Macs’ second goal go in Monday, it was quite a relief. McAuley finally had an insurance goal, and Biljan and her senior teammates were finally going to beat Marist.
“We hadn’t beaten them in my four years here, so to do it as a senior feels amazing,” Biljan said. “I’m so happy.”
Biljan had two assists and Margaret Hurley and Meg Kane each scored a goal as the Mighty Macs earned a 2-0 win at St. Xavier University for their first victory over the rival RedHawks in at least five years.
Biljan’s beautiful free kick set up the first goal for McAuley (7-5-1) 12 minutes in. She struck the ball from 35 yards and out and placed it perfectly in the box and onto the foot of Hurley, who finished.
“Kristina can hit the ball 50 yards easy,” McAuley coach Evan Strehlau said. “She is a great weapon on free kicks.”
After several missed chances for both teams, the Mighty Macs put the game away with eight minutes left. Biljan sent a corner kick into the box and Kane’s header landed in front of Marist goalkeeper Elise Dilger but beyond the goal line. It was ruled a goal after some confusion.
Dilger made two saves for Marist (7-7-1).
Steph Bert had two saves to preserve the shutout for McAuley, including a diving stop on an Ailish Rispin strike in the second half.
