Craven’s goal lifts Phoenix

Sometimes a little luck can go a long way.
After a tough conference loss to Stagg a few days earlier, the Lincoln-Way North girl’s soccer team and coach Mike Murphy righted the Phoenix ship with a 1-0 victory over host Lincoln-Way Central in Southwest Suburban conference play Tuesday night.
Junior midfielder Rita Craven bent a corner kick off of the crossbar and into the net for a goal at 15:17 of the second half for the lone tally in the game.
“It was kind of an accident to be honest,” Craven said of her goal. “It was lucky because it kind of curved in a bit and went in. I’ll take it.”
LWN (10-4-1, 2-1) appeared to be the more aggressive and quicker team in the game from the onset. Forward Jamie Beniac and midfielders Amber Huppert and Kristi Cesario used their speed down the sidelines to set up several first half scoring chances for the Phoenix that resulted in either a quality shot on goal or shots that just went wide.
