Girls Basketball: Stevenson too much for Mundelein

Perhaps Stevenson coach Tom Dineen reflected back on those games between his Buffalo Grove team and Wheeling. Those were true blowouts.
On Thursday night in Lincolnshire, Dineen was able to substitute freely for most of the second half. A bank shot from Margaret Petrick closed the third quarter scoring for Stevenson. The Patriots (14-5, 5-1) outscored visiting
Mundelein 13-0 in that quarter. The Mustangs didn’t reach double figures in scoring until halfway through the fourth quarter and fell hard 49-13 in an NSC Lake Division game.
“I was concerned coming in,’’ Dineen said. “Mundelein plays very good defense.”
Dineen also worried about how his team would respond to having some days off recently.
“We threw those concerns out the window tonight,’’ he said. “It was a great team effort.”
Mundelein guard Molly Rosenow broke into the scoring column halfway through the first quarter. And her Mustangs were only down 7-2. That was the extent of the good news for the visitors. Stevenson went on a 14-0 run. On a steal and layup from senior Olivia Whalen it was 19-2.
“Our defense was good tonight,’’ Whalen said. “We flew around. Everyone played great.”
Holding a 28-7 halftime lead, this game looked like a sure bet for the home team. Mundelein made just three of 23 shots in the first half and continued on that path in the third quarter. Of course the interior defense of
Stevenson center Julia Dabrowski helped alter a number of Mustangs shots.
Mundelein missed all nine shots in this quarter and the Patriots opened up an improbable 41-7 lead. Both Kari Moffat and Alex Elzinga had more points than the entire Mundelein team after this quarter.
Mundelein almost doubled their score in the fourth quarter. Rachael Millner, Nikki Zaprzalka and Jessica Schultz (five points) all tallied in the fourth quarter against Stevenson’s reserves. Mundelein shot a woeful six for 41
from the floor.
Point guard Moffat led all scorers with 11 points before sitting down for the fourth quarter. Elzinga closed with eight points. Katie Batman finished with seven points. Those fourth quarter scorers for Stevenson went by the
names of Paige Freudenberg, Hayley Arenson and freshmen Sophia Way and Jacqueline Green.
That third freshman, Taylor Buford, has worked her way into the starting lineup. She added four points for the Pats.
“She’s very athletic,’’ Dineen said. “She really goes for the ball.”
