Girls Basketball: New Trier bounces back, beats Hinsdale Central

New Trier‘s Maggie Lyon could not wait to get back on the floor after last Friday’s loss to Evanston.

“It definitely seemed like an eternity,” she said. “We had a junior varsity tournament Saturday and watched the tape multiple times. I recorded it on my DVR and I watched it. We had a sour taste in our mouths and we wanted to come out tonight and redeem ourselves.”

Lyon had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Brigit Ieuter and Colleen McConnell each had eight points as No. 20 New Trier (13-4) broke open an eight-point game at halftime and coasted to a 54-34 victory Tuesday at Hinsdale Central.

The Trevians led by 15 points at 24-9 with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter on a basket by Jessica Blackwell. But Hinsdale Central (6-11) closed to within 25-17 at the break on back-to-back buckets by sophomore Maddie Roglich and Madison Grace.

However, New Trier blew the game open with a 12-2 run to begin the third quarter.

“I felt we got off to a little bit of a slow start, but in the second half we really turned it up a little bit and really played to our potential,” Lyon said.

Hinsdale Central never got closer than 17 points early in the fourth quarter, allowing both teams to clear the benches.

“We wanted to use this game to work on some things we have to get better with,” New Trier coach Teri Rodgers said. “That’s one of the focuses in a game like this where you don’t know the other team very well. It’s nice to focus on ourselves.

“We talked about coming out here and doing some things tonight that we didn’t do as well as we would have liked to Friday,” she added. “Particularly in the second half, we came out and did some really good things.”

Freshman Gabrielle Rush led the Red Devils with nine points and Roglich added five points and 10 rebounds.

“From the get go, we just weren’t playing very well,” Hinsdale Central coach Tom McKenna said. “In the first half, we were lucky they weren’t shooting very well because we could have been down 20 points. In the second half, the wheels came completely off. We didn’t come to play.”
