Girls Basketball: Romeoville rolls past Plainfield Central
Updated: January 6, 2012 11:35PM
After suffering its first two losses right before Christmas, Romeoville had a few weeks to iron out some kinks.
The Spartans still need a little pressing.
Abby Smith had 13 points, five steals and four assists, Brianna Harris scored 12 points and Kiera Currie added nine points and 10 rebounds as Romeoville (11-2, 5-1 in the Southwest Prairie) opened the 2012 portion of its schedule with a 61-30 victory at Plainfield South.
The Spartans led 25-4 early in the second quarter and 39-16 early in the third. However, it could have been a lot worse. The Spartans missed 23 layups and were just 15 of 27 from the free throw line, including 7 of 15 in the first half.
“That’s one of our big stats,” Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. “We’ve been having a major problem with transition layups. We like to run and we might have to pull it off a little bit because we’re missing too many of them.
“I always tell the girls you should make 80 percent of them, so that’s 32 more points,” he added. “We didn’t need them this game, but we’re sure enough going to need them in the future. The two-week layoff kind of hurts, But it was nice to practice.”
Smith said that Romeoville has been working hard in practice, but she could not explain some of the problems the Spartans had finishing their fastbreak opportunities Friday.
“Speaking for myself, it all comes down to thinking about it too much,” she said. “But then again, we all pick each other up and move on to the next play. The losses before Christmas got to us a little bit, but the good thing about them is we had a game the next day.
“We regrouped after both losses,” Smith added. “I think we’re a good team when it comes to regrouping. I don’t think we played bad tonight, it just wasn’t our game.”
Nicole Ramaglia scored eight points and Angela Osusky added six for Romeoville.
“I thought we ran our offense well, we played well defensively and we did a pretty good job rebounding although there were a couple of times when the ball hit the floor after a missed shot,“ Carrasco said. “We did a great job boxing out, but then we just kind of looked at the ball on the ground.”
Leslie Hamilton had 11 points for Plainfield South (2-13, 0-5).
