Girls Basketball: Elk Grove rallies past Hinsdale Central

Freshman Amber Lindfors scored six points in the fourth quarter to spark Elk Grove past Hinsdale Central 46-39 in Wheaton North’s Neibch Holiday Classic on Monday.

Hinsdale Central trailed by five points entering the fourth quarter, but could not pull off an upset bid against fifth-seeded Elk Grove in the opening round of the tournament.

Lindfors scored three of Elk Grove’s four baskets midway through the fourth quarter to give the Grens (7-4) a 44-35 lead it would not relinquish.

The Devils (4-7) pulled to within 44-39 on a pair of baskets in the final two minutes by Gabrielle Rush (13 points), but Hinsdale could not score again.

Diamond Boyd led Elk Grove with 13 points and eight rebounds while Lindfors (12 points, eight rebounds) and Kelly Naughton (10 points) contributed for the Grens, which play Lyons (8-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

“I think part of the game [Lindfors] was frustrated,” Elk Grove coach Ryan Kirkorsky said. “She came out for a couple of minutes, but she responded very well.”

Hinsdale came into the game with three win in its last four games and had back-to-back wins against Downers Grove North and Oak Park-River Forest, but the Devils had not played since beating the Huskies 72-59 on Dec. 16.

“I thought our defense did a good job,” Devils coach Tom McKenna said. “They scored 40 or more points. When we hold opponents to under 50, we usually win.”

Freshman Gabrielle Rush scored 13 points to lead the Devils while Maddie Roglich had 10 points and six rebounds. Roglich scored six points in the third quarter, including a rebound and layup to trim Elk Grove’s lead to 31-28 with 25 seconds to go in the third quarter. The Grens took a 21-11 lead in the second quarter on a 15-2 run.

“We’re a lot more confident,” Roglich said. “We know we’re capable of winning. We’re much better than last year.”

Hinsdale Central plays Elgin (0-12) at noon Tuesday in the consolation quarterfinals.
