Girls Basketball: Lyons storms past Elgin
Updated: December 26, 2011 10:52PM
Lyons scored 50 of the game’s first 52 points in a 70-15 rout over Elgin at Wheaton North’s Neibch Holiday Classic on Monday.
Ashanti Davis scored 14 points and Colleen Connors added 12 points to lead the Lions (8-2), which won its fifth consecutive game and will play fifth-seeded Elk Grove (7-4) at 6 p.m.
Alex Bell led the Maroons (0-12) with nine points, all in the fourth quarter. Elgin, which went winless in last year’s tournament, had only one basket in the first quarter and did not score in the second quarter.
Lyons led 34-2 at halftime and opened a 50-2 lead in the third quarter before Elgin scored again.
Lyons played for the first time since beating Glenbard West 36-28 on Dec. 13, a layoff of 13 days.
“I was terrified. I thought that we would foul a lot or look sloppy,” Lyons coach Katie Meyers said. “At practice, we were against each other, but you lose the perspective of a game situation.”
But Lyons showed few signs of struggle after scoring the game’s first eight points. Maggie Powers scored Elgin’s only basket in the first quarter and then Lyons scored the next 42 points. Elgin missed all four of its shot attempts in the scoreless second quarter.
“Our goal is to play against great competition,” Meyers said. “The kids know the next game is tougher and we have to do something to beat [our next opponent].”
