Girls Basketball: Glenbrook North builds early lead, remains perfect in St Viator tournament

Glenbrook North rode a 21-point halftime lead to remain perfect in their holiday tournament.

The Spartans (10-4) wrapped up pool play in the 29th annual St. Viator Snowflake Tournament going a perfect 3-0 after a 62-44 victory over Fenton.

GBN opened up the first quarter with a 9-0 run led by the hot hand of senior guard Rachel Blitt, who contributed seven.

The Spartans shut down the Bison offense until the final minutes of the quarter where Fenton cut the GBN lead to 14-10.

“We were kind of playing down to their level,” said GBN head coach Renee’ Brosnan. “I think we needed to step up and play our game rather than just competing with them.”

The Central Suburban League leaders climbed back to their own level in the second period as they began with a 12-0 run and never looked back.

GBN got back to its inside game with senior forward Gabbie Sanchez who finished the game with 10 points and seven boards.

“Today was a little different [from Thursday],” said Sanchez. “We didn’t have as many outside shots, but we still worked it inside and then we went out; once we do that, the outside shots are there.”

After gaining a 35-14 halftime lead, the Spartans went to their bench and sustained a comfortable lead through the very end of the contest.

Blitt finished with 11 points and five rebounds while junior forward Erica Sogo ended the game with nine points and two rebounds.

For the Bison, sophomore guard Tina Guarino led the team with 12 points and four steals and was helped by junior forward Sidney Montano who finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

The Spartans will face off with the second-place finisher from Pool A Monday at 6 p.m. and Fenton will have to await the result of the Guerin-Leyden match-up to find out if it’s in the championship or consolation bracket.

“We didn’t really have the summer together so I think that it takes a couple of games or maybe half of the games to get your chemistry built and I think we have it,” said Brosnan. “We’ve found our chemistry and our strength and now we need to build on it and keep the momentum going.”
