JeTaun Rouse did a lot of impressive things for No. 1 Marist in its 47-43 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory Monday night over host No. 5 Marian Catholic.

She scored 10 points, including two coming on a spectacular running layup on an alley-oop pass from teammate Leah Bolton.

She had five rebounds. A couple of key steals.

But Rouse’s most critical performance was convincing the trainer she was OK to go back into the game after missing four minutes of the third quarter after a nasty spill.

Rouse was driving for a layup with 4:40 on the clock when she crashed to the floor and didn’t get up.

“I spun around for a spin move and I got tripped,” she said. “I hit my head really hard and I landed on my hip. I blacked out.”

Rouse was assisted to the bench and looked at for several minutes by the trainer while she held an ice pack on the back of her head.

“He said the third quarter I should sit out then maybe get in the game in the fourth quarter,” she said. “But I told him I was fine. I was all right to play.”

While she was out, Marist (11-0, 3-0) saw a 29-23 lead melt into 30-29 deficit. She returned to the floor with 59 seconds left in the period. Shortly after, Asianna Bey (11 points, 9 rebounds) went in for a layup to make it 31-30 RedHawks.

During the break between quarters, Marian Catholic coach Annie Byrne walked onto the floor to ask a question of one of the officials and was issued a technical foul.

“I didn’t storm the court, I was trying to get his attention. I went out there because he couldn’t hear me,” Byrne said. “He told me to get back, so I turned around to get back, and he T’d me. He way overreacted.”

Rouse hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it 32-20, triggering a 10-0 run to start the quarter.

Marian Catholic (5-4, 1-1), down 46-34 with 2:15 remaining, did storm the court with a rally that was highlighted by a three-pointer by Ashton Millender (15 points) and capped by a rebound basket with 50 seconds remaining by Megan Walsh (14 points, 12 rebounds).

Suddenly, it was 46-43.

Marist killed most of the remaining time before Leah Bolton (15 points, 13 rebounds) was fouled with six seconds showing. She missed the first of the super-bonus free throws, but hit the second to ice the verdict.

“I was pretty nervous, but I had to put all that behind me and hit it for my team,” Bolton said.
