By a millisecond, Niles West (12-1, 3-1) survived an exciting comeback by Evanston (6-6, 1-3) for a 61-60 victory in the rugged CSL South Friday.

Jewell Loyd (35 points, 12 rebounds) made two free throws after getting fouled at midcourt off a full-court inbounds play with four seconds remaining. The three officials huddled for what seemed like an eternity and decided time had not expired.

“I was not sure the call would go our way,” said Niles West coach Tony Konsewicz. “I said even before the season not to look past Evanston. That’s a dangerous team.”

“It’s tough when you have kids fighting for two hours and then you have adults taking away the outcome,” said Evanston first-year coach Elliot Whitefield.

Evanston trailed 42-34 late in the third quarter before roaring back behind sophomore guard Sierra Clayborn, who scored 24 points, 15 above her average.

The Wildkits took a 60-59 lead on a layup by 6-foot-2 junior center Alecia Cooley (10 points, 15 rebounds). Sinclair Cunningham, a 6-1 senior also had 10 points for the Wildkits.

Loyd is averaging 33 points, up from last season’s 30.2. The Notre Dame-bound senior scored a career-high 50 in the Wolves’ 67-47 win over Maine West Tuesday.

No. 10 Maine South (13-1), No. 13 Niles West (12-1) and No. 20 Glenbrook South (9-2) are tied atop the CSL South with 3-1 records, a game ahead of No. 15 New Trier (9-2). The four teams are 32-1 in non-conference games.
