As Friday’s St. Charles North-Streamwood girls basketball game wore on, play got more and more physical.

Streamwood didn’t mind one bit, though, and turned in its best defensive effort to date behind guard Amanda Patterson and center Hannah McGlone in a 46-34 Upstate Eight River victory.

“I don’t mind physical games because I think it makes everyone work harder and makes everyone want to win it more as a team,” said Patterson after scoring 11 points to help the Sabres snap St. Charles North’s three-game winning streak.

The Sabres (5-4, 2-1) held North scoreless the game’s final 5:27. They limited North to three first-quarter points and three fourth-quarter points and held the Stars to 2-of-20 from the field the first and fourth quarters.

Streamwood outscored North 14-3 the final quarter while forcing eight turnovers.

“Our defense won this game tonight,” Sabres coach George Rosner said. “It was a tough man-to-man and they did a good job of talking to each other to help.”

McGlone, a 6-foot sophomore, blocked three fourth-quarter shots and finished with six blocks. She hauled in 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Sabres in both areas.

“She is as good as I’ve had inside,” Rosner said of McGlone. “She anticipates well. She can block shots. She’s very active in our defense.”

A three-point play by the 5-4 Patterson with 6:25 remaining broke a tie at 32 and she went on to score seven fourth-quarter points while also getting four fourth-quarter rebounds.

“She rebounded real well,” Rosner said. “She was all over the basket and had a great floor game tonight on offense. She just had a great fourth quarter as our senior out there, our only senior starter.”

The Stars got within 35-34 when Alex Silverman drove the lane and scored, but she aggravated an ankle sprain on the play and had to leave the game with nine points, matching Megan Booe for team-high.

Then the Sabres’ defense took over and pitched a shutout the rest of the way, forcing five turnovers. Patterson hit from the top of the key for a 37-34 lead and Jessica Cerda scored four of her 12 points at the line after that to ice the win.

“It was a physical game on both ends and our girls did play strong,” North coach Colleen Brennan said. “We could have used Alex Silverman on the court (at the end).”
