In an early-season battle of unbeaten Central Suburban South heavyweights, No. 15 Niles West rolled past cold-shooting No. 10 New Trier 45-23 on Tuesday.
Notre Dame-bound Jewell Loyd scored 25 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had four steals and three blocks for Niles West (10-0, 2-0).
Normally accurate New Trier (6-1, 1-1) shot 8-for-52 from the field. The Trevians scored two points in the first quarter and eight in the second half.
“We are a good offensive team, but you’re going to have those nights,” New Trier coach Teri Rodgers said.
The 5-foot-10 Loyd set the tone by shutting out 6-1 Maggie Lyon in the opening period. Lyon, a Northwestern recruit finished with nine points while 5-11 post Jessica Blackwell (three points) went scoreless until the final two minutes.
Loyd and Lyon have been competing against each other for five years.
“She has lit me up before,” Loyd said. “We knew everyone on their team could shoot. We said defense was the biggest thing for us.”
Liz Troyk’s three-pointer put the Wolves up 43-20 with 3:27 remaining. Troyk and center Jackie Cardenas each scored seven points.
Defensive stalwart Molly Kleppin did not play in the second half after taking a shoulder to the side of the head late in the second quarter.
