Even in defeat, things are looking up for the girls basketball program at Lakes.
Coach Pete Schneider watched his team’s near-miss 46-41 loss at Carmel on Monday night, and saw the Lakes glass as very much three-quarters full rather than one-fourth empty.
“We haven’t had a bad effort all year,” he said after his team dropped to 2-5, although four losses came in the rugged Lake Zurich tournament.
“We had a great second quarter tonight (13-6 scoring edge). One of the nice things about this team is that we have 10 kids and they all contribute.
“Unfortunately, the rebounding in the third quarter killed us.”
Lakes led 21-18 at halftime, but the game turned when Carmel outscored the visitors 16-6 in third quarter.
Carmel led 41-33 with 3:48 left in the game, but Lakes got within 42-41 with 32 seconds left on a layup by Nicole Mugged.
After Carmel missed two free throws, Lakes tried to get the ball down low, but the Corsairs’ Sarah McHugh made the steal, was fouled and hit both free throws with 14 seconds left for a 44-41 lead.
Lakes’ three-point shot for the tie was blocked, and Carmel’s Kathleen Felicelli ended the game with a layup just before the final buzzer.
Schneider noted his team couldn’t stop Carmel’s 5-foot-10 sophomore Cassidy Kloss, who celebrated her 16th birthday with a 16-point, eight-rebound night.
Felicelli added 10 points and seven boards.
Terese McMahon led Lakes with 14 points and six boards. Amanda Smith added nine markers and Ashlee Cunningham scored eight points and had nine rebounds.
“We had a nice talking-to at halftime,” said Kloss. “We weren’t doing a lot of the little things like boxing out and playing transition defense.
“We played more together in the second half. We went back to a lot of the things we do well, and it helped.”
Kloss, who is from Libertyville, played AAU ball for Lakes’ coach in junior high.
Carmel is 5-2 and plays at Fenwick on Wednesday.
Lakes has a game the same night on the road against rival Antioch.
