The Marist girls basketball team survived a second-half surge from Homewood-Flossmoor in a sloppy finish to the RedHawk Thanksgiving Classic on Friday night.
Marist remained unbeaten in six games this season, beating H-F 55-51 on its way to the tournament title.
Marist forward Leah Bolton finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Bolton showed composure, scoring on an array of baskets around the hoop, but afterward admitted there were jitters heading into the contest.
“We got a little nervous being so eager to win this game. We’ve been working towards winning this tournament for a long time,” Bolton said. “H-F was the toughest team we played so far.”
Marist took a 34-17 lead into halftime, thanks to an 11-0 run to open the game. H-F (4-2) crawled back into contention with physical second-half play and a better understanding of how to strike Marist’s 1-3-1 zone defense.
“We switched up our offense from a passing offense to a dribble-drive attack,” H-F coach Dana Noble said. “Every game we’ve played we go on a big spurt. We have the potential to compete with good teams but we need a full four quarters.”
H-F’s Danielle Woolfolk (15 points) cut the Marist lead to five with a 3-pointer with 27 seconds to play. After an H-F steal, Charnelle Reed (14 points) sank a pair of free throws to make it 54-51 with 15 seconds left.
Marist got a free throw from Asianna Bey (13 points, 7 rebounds) to make it a two-possession game.
JaTaun Rose finished with 13 points and added four steals for the RedHawks.
