Bartlett’s girls basketball team beat one of the biggest teams it will face all season, Naperville Central, Wednesday at the Tip-Off Tournament, which is hosted by Benet, Metea Valley and Central.

Friday, the Hawks had to switch gears to face one of the quickest teams they will see all season, Benet. The change in styles didn’t slow Bartlett down, as the Hawks improved to 5-0 on the season with a 58-43 win.

The win clinched the tournament title for the second straight season, regardless of how their 1:30 p.m. Saturday game against Metea goes. Benet will face Naperville Central at 5 p.m. in the tournament finale, but since both already lost to Bartlett, neither team can sneak in to win the title. All of Saturday’s games will be played at Naperville Central.

“In a tournament, you get to see all kinds of different teams,” Bartlett coach Denise Sarna said. “We’re happy with the win. Benet is a good team. When you have shooters like that, they keep coming with shot after shot. We have stuff to work on, that’s for sure.”

Benet (3-2) kept hoisting shots all day, a whopping 71 in total, but the Redwings struggled to find the net. Only 16 of those shots went in, including a 5-for-31 clip from the three-point line.

“We struggled offensively,” Benet coach Peter Paul said. “The effort was certainly there. We worked very hard, but we couldn’t put the ball in the basket. Hopefully that’s the strength of our team, but it hasn’t come forth like we hope it will.”

Benet’s Sidney Prasse (team-high 10 points) shook free of Bartlett’s extra defensive pressure on her to drill consecutive three-pointers early in the third quarter that cut the Bartlett lead to 31-27. But Benet never scored the rest of the quarter and the Hawks responded with an 11-0 run that stretched into the fourth quarter to put the game away. Six of the points were scored by Haley Videckis, who led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Kristin Conniff (14 points) and Janessa Baker (10 points) also reached double figures for the Hawks.

“When our shots weren’t falling, we started looking inside and I think that’s what really picked us up tonight, especially the fact that we sunk our free throws (16-of-21 as a team in the fourth quarter),” Videckis said. “I’m really proud of our team coming together.”
