No slowing down for Fenwick’s Corvino

If Paige Corvino plays basketball every day this summer, that would suit Fenwick’s senior guard just fine.

On Friday, Corvino missed the opening day of the Minute Man Classic at Riverside-Brookfield with the Friars, as she was returning home that evening from an AAU tournament, the U.S. Junior Nationals Premier Invitational in Cincinnati.

But by Saturday morning, Corvino was at R-B to join Fenwick in the semifinals of the Minute Man Classic. The Friars finished second to Hillcrest after losing in the championship game. Fenwick beat neighborhood rival Oak Park-River Forest in the semifinals earlier.

“You have to be ready every single day,” said Corvino, a Clarendon Hills resident. “I love basketball. (Playing daily) would be fine with me.”

With the Lisle-based Bulls Elite 2012 Black, Corvino is playing in AAU tournaments with two other Fenwick teammates — junior guard Maggie Reilly and senior guard Katie Johns. The club team is playing in the Nike Summer Showcase, which ends Friday.

Corvino will change into a Fenwick jersey to play in the Maine West Observation tournament Saturday and Sunday.

She’ll have a small break until she’s on the road again with Bulls Elite. Her club team ends the July AAU season at the Music City Madness tourney in Franklin, Tenn., July 22-25, and at the USJN Summer Final in Waukegan July 29-31.

Corvino is in her third and final season as a member of the Bulls Elite.

“I’m really excited. I love going to Tennessee,” Corvino said. “It should be really fun. Hopefully, a couple of players that missed Ohio should be back.”

When possible, Corvino attends Fenwick tournaments over Bulls Elite tournaments during the summer. After playing in the Maine West Observation tourney, Corvino’s commitment to Bulls Elite may not include a tournament, but the team has practices scheduled for July 17-19. Before heading to Ohio and Tennessee, Bulls Elite held double-session training camps from June 29 to July 1.

“We played pretty well in Ohio, but I missed few games (with Fenwick),” Corvino said. “Fenwick is my first priority. If Fenwick is playing, I’ll usually try to be there.”
