Girls Basketball: Seton’s season comes to an end

With his team falling behind by 13 points just four minutes into Monday’s 1A DeKalb Supersectional against Aquin, Seton coach Kevin Green knew what to expect from his squad.
The Sting would not go quietly if this season proved anything.
“This team never gave up on me,” Green said. “They played hard the whole game.”
Seton regrouped and chipped away, drawing within 10 points in the second quarter but no closer in a 61-35 loss.
Tiffany Ellis (eight points), Brittany Mitchell (seven), Ebony Bailey (seven) and Desiree Jackson (nine rebounds) led Seton (23-9) in the season-ending loss. Sophie Brunner was a one-woman wrecking crew for Aquin (28-4), scoring 22 points, pulling down 16 rebounds and dishing out five assists. Aubrey Chang added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Aquin raced out to a 13-0 in the first quarter, hitting five of its first seven shots including three three-pointers, to force Seton into playing catch-up the entire game.
“We just had to get back into the game and finish our layups,” Seton’s Ariana Jackson said. “We had to be more aggressive.”
With nowhere to go but up, the Sting switched to a man-to-man defense and cut to within ten points twice (30-20 and 32-22), but Aquin responded with an extended 12-4 run over the second and third quarters to regain control.
Brunner scored 17 of her 22 points in the second half.
Aquin committed 21 turnovers on the night and shot just 12 of 25 from the free throw line, but Seton could never string a run together and capitalize, finishing 15-of-57 from the field and 5-of-23 from three-point range.
“I told the girls ‘This is just a game,’” Green said. “Don’t keep your heads down. They’ve won more games than any (girls) team in Seton history. Life will have a ton of letdowns. It’s about being strong.”
