No. 3 seed Glenbrook South dominated the third quarter and then held off a furious New Trier rally in the fourth to defeat the Trevians 51-47 in Thursday night’s Class 4A Glenbrook South Regional final in Glenview.
The Titans (22-7) were led in scoring by junior Lindsey Oldshue (18 points), a defensive stopper who notched a season-high points total before fouling out with 5:29 remaining in the contest.
Glenbrook South led 41-27 entering the fourth quarter. But New Trier All-Stater Maggie Lyon dragged her team back into the ballgame, scoring 10 of her team-high 20 in the final frame.
No. 5 seed New Trier (20-10) got to within two, 47-45, on a three-pointer by Brigit Ieuter with 54 seconds remaining.
But Glenbrook South, a team that has struggled from the foul line for much of the season, got four clutch free throws from senior Colleen McDonagh (17 points) down the stretch to preserve the win. The Titans advance to Tuesday’s New Trier Sectional semifinal
“Give New Trier a lot of credit. They never quit. They are a great team” Glenbrook South head coach Steve Weissenstein said. “We made some bad decisions in the fourth quarter, hurried things a little bit. But when we needed to, the girls made their free throws and got a couple stops defensively.
“All that matters at this time of year is that you move on to the next game. You don’t get any points for winning pretty, which it wasn’t.”
Oldshue, who always draws the toughest defensive assignment, made Lyon work hard for all her points. The Northwestern-bound star finished 7-for 28 shooting in the contest.
Lyon went scoreless in the third quarter, as Glenbrook South turned a 22-19 halftime lead into a 14-point advantage.
But Lyon led fight-back in the fourth, driving the offense and also picking up two big blocks and multiple steals. She finished with 10 rebounds in the game.
“We didn’t do a good job in the third quarter,” New Trier head coach Teri Rodgers said. “We dug ourselves a 10-foot hole and only had a nine-foot ladder. I was really proud of the kids, how they did come back. But we just put ourselves in a situation where we couldn’t get all the way back.”
