Girls Basketball: New Trier passes test, tops Resurrection
Teri Rodgers wasn’t thrilled when the regional pairings were released and New Trier was facing Resurrection in the playoff opener.
But the coach and fifth-seeded Trevians passed the tough test Tuesday with a 55-35 victory over the 11th-seeded Bandits at Glenbrook South.
“They’re good,” Rodgers said. “I saw that draw, and I wasn’t happy at all. They play hard, and they can hit the three. In the playoffs, that’s dangerous.”
Despite a slow start, No. 23-ranked New Trier (20-9) grabbed the early the lead and never let go.
Emma Rossi’s two baskets at the end of the second quarter gave the Trevians a 23-13 lead at the half. The senior then scored another two field goals in a row early in the third quarter to complete a 10-0 run that put New Trier in control for good. Resurrection (14-15) never got closer than 15 the rest of the way and lost for the first time in four games.
“Emma’s a great player and is athletic,” Rodgers said. “We like having her out there.”
Resurrection took some time to get its offense going. The Bandits were without a field goal for more than 10 minutes to start the game.
Anne Larsen scored nine points for the Bandits, and Liz Rehberger added eight in the season-ending loss.
Like she did Friday, Maggie Lyon saved her best for the second half. The senior scored 16 of her game-high 19 points in the final 16 minutes.
New Trier moves to to play Glenbrook South on Thursday in the regional final. The teams split the season series, with the Titans earning a 49-44 win over the Trevians in Glenview on Dec. 9.
