Boys Basketball: Benet pulls away from Marian Catholic

Benet coach Peter Paul was this close to calling a timeout with his team trailing Marian Catholic 11-2 early in the first quarter Thursday in lisle.
So what changed his mind?
“I saw Chrissy (Prasse) attacking the basket, otherwise there would have been a timeout,” he said. “We didn’t want to stop play at that particular moment. She was going to the basket, they got a foul call and it was 11-4 and we made a little run.”
No. 6 Benet (21-4, 6-1 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference) made more than just a little run. The Redwings went on a 21-5 scoring spree over the next 10 minutes and gradually pulled away for a 62-45 victory.
Chrissy Prasse led Benet with 25 points and senior sister Sidney Prasse added 19, including a pair of three-pointers at the end of the third quarter that extended the Redwings’ lead to 46-31.
“I think it took us a couple minutes to get it going,” Chrissy Prasse said. “Once we get our momentum going, there’s nothing that can stop us I believe. We have a bunch of three-point shooters, we can all drive, we can all shoot three-pointers and none of us are shy to shoot. That helps us out.”
Taylor Valentine had nine points, six rebounds and three steals and Nicole Valentine added five points for Benet, which won for the 17th consecutive time.
“I thought we played well defensively today,” Paul said. “We shared the basketball, and even the kids that didn’t score…Taylor got a ton of rebounds on the weakside, we battled very hard, we shared the basketball and we took care of the basketball.”
Six-foot-1 junior Megan Walsh led No. 25 Marian Catholic (16-11, 4-2) with 10 points and seven rebounds despite sitting out most of the first half with foul trouble.
“We wanted to win this game,” Walsh said. “We’re sick of losing. We came out strong, we just have to stay strong throughout and not freak out when they make a shot and not put our heads down. It felt good early. We just kind of fell apart after they started making shots.”
Senior Alanna Ferry, freshman Teniya Page and sophomore Ashton Millender each added nine points for Marian Catholic.
“It’s not that we’re young, I think it’s just the experience,” Walsh said. “They’re still playing their hearts out.”
