Girls Basketball: Hannah McGlone leads Streamwood in win over Larkin

Larkin’s girls had fought their way back into Wednesday’s Upstate Eight River road game before Streamwood center Hannah McGlone took a message from Sabres assistant coach John Sandrick and converted into real on-court production.
“Sandro told me you have one foul, be aggressive,” McGlone said. “That’s a big accomplishment for me because I never really have one foul.
“Once he told me to be aggressive, I went for it.”
McGlone hit the boards for three straight rebound buckets, including one three-point play, widened a 48-44 lead to 55-44 and went on to score a career-high 33 points in a 69-55 victory over the Royals.
“In our game the other day we played Marian and she had good looks and didn’t finish,” Sabres coach George Rosner said. “She said tonight in the locker room and in practice yesterday, ‘Finish ... I have to finish.’ That was on her mind and I thought she brought that into the game tonight.”
McGlone a 6-foot sophomore, used her height advantage against a Royals team that had no one taller than 5-9 to also gather a career-high 16 rebounds.
She connected on 15-of-17 shooting from the field, with both misses coming in the third quarter.
However, it was the stretch of three straight rebound buckets that started a 9-0 Sabres run midway through the fourth quarter that locked up the win.
“We tried our best to shut her down,” said Larkin coach Tissanie Simmons. “A lot of the girls are just kind of unfamiliar with how to guard the post.
“They definitely hit us at our weakness.”
The Royals (3-17, 0-8) had 17 points from guard Maggie Hofmann, 14 from Victoria Patterson and 10 from Allison Driskill, but got outscored 25-13 in the fourth quarter after they had surged within 44-42. They ended the third quarter by going on a 12-0 run in the last 2:17 after they’d fallen behind 44-30.
Four points from Abigail Alvarez and six from Victoria Patterson keyed that rally. But then McGlone took over in the fourth quarter with 13 of her points and five of her rebounds.
The short-handed Sabres (9-10, 5-3), already down Amanda Patterson and Jessica Mitchell due to season-ending injuries, also had to withstand illness to several players, including Holly Foret and Jessica Cerda. Foret came up big in the fourth quarter for six of her 12 points and Cerda added 11 points.
“We have a big infirmary,” McGlone said.
Streamwood’s 69-point output represented a season high, after only scoring 27 in the first half.
“We came out much more focused — we talked about that at halftime,” Rosner said. “Gently.”
