Elgin had an emotional win earlier in the week against its rivals from Larkin, and the Maroons didn’t think they were going to get as emotional a game Saturday against Westminster Christian.
But that is exactly what transpired as Porsche Griggs stole an inbounds pass and laid it in with 2.7 seconds left to spurn her former Elgin teammates and give the Warriors an emotional 51-50 nonconference victory.
Westminster Christian (13-5) took control in the second and third quarters and led by as many as 12 points. That would be the wakeup call the Maroons needed as Elgin (1-17) stormed back to take a 48-47 lead with 1:30 left in the game.
Westminster’s Claire Speweik the put the Warriors back up by one, but Elgin’s Briana Hamilton answered with a basket of her own to put the Maroons back up by 50-49.
Hamilton blocked a Westminster shot moments later and it looked like the game was in Elgin’s favor.
That was until Porsche Griggs was able to steal an inbounds pass and put Westminster up by one. Elgin had one last prayer at the buzzer, but it wasn’t answered as Westminster held on for the win.
Griggs scored 11 points and added 11 rebounds in her first game against her old team.
“What a crazy game,” said Griggs. “It was so weird and emotional playing against my best friends. I was so fortunate to get the last shot and thankful it went in.”
Westminster coach Ken Flickinger was pleased with his team’s effort on Saturday.
“This game was such a dog fight,” said Flickinger. “Our defense was huge for us in this game. We got rattled a little in the second half, but trusted our offense and were able to execute when we needed to.”
Elgin was unable to win its second game in a row after breaking a 44-game losing streak with its triumph against Larkin, but it didn’t go down without a fight.
Hamilton showed all in attendance why she is one of the best players in the area as she racked up Hamilton finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds.
“Our team fights and we don’t give up,” said Hamilton. “I was proud how we fought back and how we played.”
