Football: Prairie Ridge rolls by Glenbard South

Just over 10 weeks after their first matchup-up with Prairie Ridge, Glenbard South experienced a bit of deja vu in a 55-7 loss Saturday night in Glen Ellyn in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

The two teams met in the first week of the season, with the visiting Wolves winning convincingly 55-12.

“Glenbard South got a lot better,” said Wolves running back Jordan Getzelman, who rushed for two touchdowns and 108 yards on five carries. “We’ve gotten better, too, and we wanted to prove it.”

Prairie Ridge (10-1) opened the game with a six-play, 74-yard drive, culminating with a 15-yard quarterback keeper by Nick Nissen for the touchdown.

Led by the legs of Zach Smith, the Raiders (7-4) countered with a six-play, 82-yard scoring drive on their first possession. Smith had four carries for 80 yards on the drive, including a two-yard touchdown run.

After giving up the score, the Prairie Ridge defense picked up their play several notches.

The starting unit only gave up an additional 37 yards before several players were pulled early in the third quarter with a 49-7 lead and a running clock.

On offense, the Wolves relied on Connor Greenwald (seven carries, 85 yards, two TD runs) and Getzelman.

Up 14-7 late in the first quarter Getzelman had a 60-yard touchdown run negated by a holding penalty. Backed up 10 yards by the infraction, the junior broke free for a 70-yard TD run on the very next play.

“The guys made the blocks and I followed the seems,” Getzelman said. “It gave us more momentum.”

Following a 25-yard touchdown run by Getzelman with 8:54 left in the second quarter, special teams took center stage for Prairie Ridge. Joe Kornblith blocked a Tory Fobbs punt attempt and Collin Corcoran returned the ball 10 yards for the Wolves score to go up 35-7.

“We were getting close on the previous punts,” said Wolves coach Chris Schremp. “We saw some things on film and we thought we could take advantage of it.”

Nissen (4 of 5, 78 yards) connected with Sean Valentine in stride for a 40-yard TD pass on Prairie Ridge’s first offensive play of the second half.

With 6:24 left in the third quarter, Nick Lanaski intercepted a Raiders pass and returned it 49 yards for score, extending Prairie Ridge’s lead to 55-7.

The Wolves will face Nazareth in the quarterfinals.
