King got a measure of revenge against Land of Lincoln conference foe Julian as it avenged an early-season loss with a 16-12 victory in the second round of the Public League playoffs Thursday night at Gately Stadium. DaeShaun Hurley scored from five yards out with 2:53 remaining in the first quarter on fourth down. The Jaguars drove 80 yards in 12 plays after recovering a fumble.

Freshman Lance Robinson scored King’s first touchdown on a 13-yard run with 9:11 remaining in the second quarter to put the Jaguars up 7-6. King quarterback Nathaniel Powell scored with seven seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Jaguars a 14-6 lead.

Julian cut the lead to 14-12 on a 39-yard touchdown reception by DeMarlon Morris from Hurley with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter. Julian tried a fake punt from 1-yard line of King with 2:12 remaining in the fourth quarter but the play resulted in a safety. After King went three and out, Julian’s last hope was stopped when Robinson picked off Hurley with 1:20 remaining in the game.

“Julian is a real good team,” said King coach Lonnie Williams. “Last time they caught us flat footed. It was their quarterback’s first game of the season and we had not prepared for him. This time we made the necessary adjustments and when our defense plays well, we usually win.”

“I just didn’t want to be the one that caused the team to lose the game,” said Robinson. “I wanted to do whatever I could to help the team win and to make up for my mistake.”

Julian coach Jason Alexander said despite all the distractions, it was a pretty good year.

“We had a lot of ups and downs and turmoil this season, but we stuck together. It is a credit to the coaches and players that we were able to play through it all.”
