Jordan Westerkamp leads Montini past Woodstock North

Updated: October 29, 2011 4:59PM

With 7:53 left in the third quarter, Woodstock North appeared to have all the momentum. Except for the last 5.7 seconds of the first half, the Thunder had possessed the ball for the last 13:30, gaining 157 yards on 27 plays, and cutting a 21-0 deficit to 21-14. The Thunder had boxed Montini into a third-and-long, and appeared poised to get the ball back. The Broncos needed a spark.

They got it from Jordan Westerkamp.

Westerkamp made an improbable grab on a 52-yard pass through tight coverage and reenergized the reigning 5A state champs, who then rattled off three touchdowns on their next three plays from scrimmage to cruise to a 49-14 victory.

Montini (8-2) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Westerkamp opened the scoring with a 55-yard punt return touchdown. On the next possession, Westerkamp struck again, this time hauling in a 6-yard touchdown pass from John Rhode. Just before the end of the quarter, Rhode found a wide open Joe Borsellino for a 52-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, Woodstock North (7-3) was able to slow the Bronco attack and began running effectively on the Bronco defense. Both Thunder scores came via goal line plunges from Ryan Wade, who ended the game with 21 carries for 68 yards.

After Woodstock North narrowed the gap to a single score, Montini went back to its aerial attack, scoring from 40 and 64-yards out, and setting up another score with Westerkamp’s 52 yard grab to expand their lead to 42-14.

Westerkamp ended the game with 7 catches for 127 yards, while Rhode threw for 325 yards and four touchdowns.

Dimitri Taylor rounded out the scoring for the Broncos with a 31-yard touchdown run.
