Gordon Tech holds on against St Ignatius

In the second game ever played at St. Ignatius, the host Wolfpack almost gave the home crowd something to cheer about, mounting a big rally before dropping a Catholic League Red game 34-31 Saturday afternoon to Gordon Tech.

The Rams got out to a quick 28-0 lead after the first quarter before St. Ignatius rattled off 31 straight points, taking the lead right before the end of the third quarter.

But as it has all season, Gordon Tech used the legs of quarterback Julian Russell to get the lead back and eventually win the game.

“I think we got a little too excited there after the first quarter,’’ Russell said. “We can’t do that and I don’t really know what happened but we got the win.’’

After the Wolfpack took the 31-28 lead with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter, the Rams (5-4, 3-1) got a 60-yard return by Habeeb Durojaiye setting up the drive the led to the game-winning score. Russell (15 carries, 125 yards) scored on a 14-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving the Rams the 34-31 advantage.

Durojaiye got the Rams on the board first, scoring on an 18-yard run, before Jorge Garcia scampered for a 65-yard score and Steve Pittman scored on a one-yard plunge. Dakota Pisarek scored Gordon Tech’s fourth touchdown of the first quarter on a 29-yard run.

St. Ignatius (2-7, 1-3) started it’s comeback late in the second quarter, as Jack Miya connected with George Doherty on a 25-yard pass to get the Wolfpack on the board. Dan Schiltz took over the quarterbacking duties at the end of the first half and led St. Ignatius on a scoring drive with 11.7 seconds left in the first half, when he connected with Matt McCareins on a 14-yard touchdown pass.

Schiltz and McCareins (seven catches, 123 yards) hooked up again in the third quarter on a 44-yard pass before Schiltz (7 of 16, 147 yards) gave the Wolfpack their first lead of the game after he connected with Doherty on a 30-yard scoring pass.

“This is a big win for us because it gives us a chance for the playoffs,’’ said Russell.

Gordon Tech has not made the football state playoffs since 2005.
