Quinn Baker and Cary-Grove pulled the big upset over No. 7 Prairie Ridge 22-21 in overtime Friday in Crystal Lake.
In overtime, Nick Nissen scored on a six-yard run to put Prairie Ridge up 21-14.
Baker then found Zach Marszal all alone in the end zone on a 4th and 12 play in overime to pull the Trojans to 21-20.
“We put that play in this week just for this situation,” said Baker, who rushed for two touchdowns earlier. “I just threw it to him.”
Then, going for two, Baker pitched to Ryan Mahoney on the option. Mahoney took the pitch and dove for the clinching score.
“We were always going for two,” Cary-Grove coach Brad Seaburg said. “The more difficult play was the touchdown.”
Prairie Ridge had tied the game in regulation on a difficult situation as well. Facing a fourth and 10 from their 23 with just under two minutes to play, the Wolves scored on a hook and ladder.
Nissen threw to Sean Valentine, who then pitched to Jordan Getzelman, who raced the final 67 yards to tie the game at 14.
The teams had battled to a 7-7 tie at the half with each quarterback scoring on a run.
Prairie Ridge (8-1, 5-1 Fox Valley Valley) tallied first on 23-yard run by Nissen. Baker would then score for Cary-Grove (7-2, 4-2) on a one-yard run with 3:47 left in the half.
Baker, who had another one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, finished with 153 yards on 25 carries.
