The Fenger football team has gone through its share of ups and downs this season, but it left the field Thursday afternoon all smiles as it defeated visiting Orr 30-20 in the opening round of the Public League playoffs.
The visitors built a 20-point lead and held it until late in the third quarter when Fenger erupted for 30 straight points to pull out the victory.
The Spartans gave Fenger an early gift when the center snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt to give Fenger their first points of the evening. Malik Terrell scored on a 37-yard run with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter. Quarterback Darren Boone went 36 yards on a quarterback draw to pull within 20-16. Malik Harlan scored on a 17-yard run off tackle with 10:40 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Titans the lead for good at 22-20.
After the defense stopped Orr on a fourth and two from the Titans 31-yard line with 3:41 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Titans went 31 yards in five plays and scored on a six-yard pass to Aaron Sanders from Boone. Boone only had 27 yards passing, but gained 110 yards on 15 carries. Sanders led defense with 10 tackles and one sack.
“We wanted to win this one for Coach Chambers. We knew we could play a lot better than we were playing in the first half. We just pulled together at half time,” said Boone.
Jamal McDowell led Orr scoring two touchdowns on runs of one and 19 yards and gained 96 yards on 12 carries. Oliver Raykwon scored on a 42-yard run.
“This one really hurts,” said Orr coach Kevin Jackson. “Everything we did in the first half to get the lead we stopped doing in the second half. The kids thought the game was over and we paid for it.”
