With Loyola quarterback Malcolm Weaver out hurt and Brother Rice pulling within 13-10 on an 88-yard Martez Walker kickoff return touchdown, then stopping the Ramblers on a fake punt, momentum seemed to be squarely on the Crusaders’ side in the third quarter Friday.

But just as quickly, the game turned again. Rice missed a potential game-tying field goal and Loyola delivered a back-breaker with a 79-yard touchdown pass on a screen from Peter Pujals to Marquese Martin-Hayes. Visiting Loyola went on to a 20-13 Catholic League Blue win.

“We had that play in our back pocket for an important time,” Loyola coach John Holecek said. “We have full faith in Peter and he came in and did a great job.”

Brother Rice (5-3, 1-3 Catholic League Blue) pulled within 20-13 with 59 seconds left in the game on the second field goal of the night by Brian Kane, but could not recover an onside kick.

Loyola (8-0, 3-0) built a 13-3 lead on two field goals from Will Cushwa and a two-yard William Palivos (24 carries, 86 yards) touchdown run.

Pat Parrilli was 8 of 16 passing for 128 yards for the Crusaders, who were held to 43 yards rushing.

Holecek said Weaver was “dinged up” and cleared to return, but held out as a precaution. Loyola will host St. Rita with the conference title on the line next week.
