When Rich Central quarterback Devonte Black hooked up with Shawn Mitchell Jr. for a 77-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring his team to within six points of Crete-Monee, it looked as if the Olympians might pull off a shocker against the No. 5 Warriors.

That wasn’t the case. A six-minute, 56-second, 20-play drive that was capped by Marcus Terrell’s one-yard touchdown vaulted visiting Crete-Monee to a 34-20 Southland win Friday night.

“I’m proud of my team,” Crete-Monee coach Jerry Verde said. “We faced adversity. (Rich Central’s) got athletes and we didn’t fold when everything seemed like it was going to go downhill.”

The win kept the Warriors (7-0, 3-0) unbeaten.

With Rich Central (3-4, 2-2) down 13-6, the Olympians looked poised to tie the score midway through the second quarter. But Black overthrew a receiver and Crete-Monee’s Anthony Standifer was there to not only haul in the interception but run it back 77 yards to give the Warriors a 19-6 halftime lead.
