Shelton’s scoop and score lifts WW South

Mike Shelton took a hop and helped Wheaton Warrenville South to an improbable 13-7 victory over Glenbard North Friday in Carol Stream.
Shelton picked up a blocked field goal by Zach Kyllonen and raced 71 yards untouched with no time left on the clock to give the Tigers the victory.
Shelton says the Tigers actually practice the play.
“We practice this every Wednesday,” Shelton said. “I am the scoop and score guy. Kyllonen blocks it and I scoop it up and go. I got a hop tonight and took off.”
Kyllonen, who blocked the 28-yard attemp, said linebackers coach Matt St. Clair came up with the play.
“We do it about twelve times in practice,” Kyllonen said. “Coach St. Clair said to take a flat angle down and I did.”
Shelton and Kyllonen were able to execute the play because the Tigers had been called for roughing the kicker on a missed 39-yard field goal as time expired. Because it was a defensive penalty, there was an additional untimed play allowed.
“There are always crazy kicking plays on this field when we play them,” Wheaton Warrenville South coach Ron Muhitch said. “This time it was in our favor.”
Glenbard North (5-2, 3-2) took 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. The Panthers went 80 yards on nine plays with Justin Jackson covering the final 13 on a nifty run off of a pass from Brian Murphy.
WW South (4-3, 4-1) answered right back. The Tigers went 56 yards on eight plays, capped by a one-yard plunge by Dan Vitale.
