Glenbard West holds off Addison Trail

Something had to give, and it wasn’t going to be Glenbard West’s defense.
Junior quarterback Henry Haeffner found 6-foot-5 Nathan Marcus with a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to break a scoreless tie, and Joe Zito scored from one-yard out following a blocked punt as No. 2 Glenbard West (7-0) shut out previously-unbeaten Addison Trail 14-0 in a West Suburban Conference crossover Friday in Addison.
Glenbard West’s defense held Addison Trail to 36 yards including minus-11 rushing.
“Our starting defense has played real well this year, and then we’d give up a couple of scores at the end of games,” Glenbard West’s Tommy Schutt said. “Getting a shutout is something we stressed all week. We had a great week of practice, watched a lot of film and got to know their tendencies pretty well. That set us up for a great show tonight.”
Addison Trail managed just 16 yards in the first half, most it coming on a 14-yard pass completion from Trevor Bermingham to Nick Wisniewski that gave the Blazers their initial first down at their own 20-yard line with 2:19 remaining in the second quarter. Addison Trail rushed for just two yards in the first half.
But Addison Trail’s defense was equally stingy. The pass completion came just three plays after the Blazers stopped Glenbard West on third-and-one and fourth-and-two inside the Addison Trail 10-yard line. The Hilltoppers also came up a yard short on fourth-and-eight at the Blazers’ 35 in the first quarter.
“Our guys fought and fought and fought,” Addison Trail coach Paul Parpet Jr. said. “A couple of breaks went their way. We turned the ball over, they turned the ball over. They capitalized on our one turnover and that was probably the biggest difference in the game.”
Cody Balogh led Glenbard West with 56 yards on 15 carries and Joe Zito added 55 yards on 14 carries.
