Butkus leads Mount Carmel to win

Running Mount Carmel’s option offense, quarterback Don Butkus Jr. is rarely asked to fling the ball around the field.
Visiting St. Laurence Friday in a Catholic League crossover, Butkus showed that when needed he can certainly throw the ball. The junior quarterback threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in Mount Carmel’s 51-6 win.
“We have all the trust in the world in Don,” Caravan receiver Frank Kelly said. “All offseason he proved he was a leader and could take over the team.”
Following a safety, Butkus hooked up with Kelly on a 29-yard touchdown strike for Mount Carmel (6-1) early in the first quarter. Butkus (11 of 13, 170 yards) also found Mayan Cook (37 yards) and Jason Gasser (19 yards) for scores through the air in the first half while adding a two-yard keeper.
Draco Smith (five rushes, 104 yards) also scored on a 38-yard run in the first. The Caravan led 37-0 at the half.
“The whole week we had a bad taste in our mouth (losing to Loyola),” Kelly said. “We practiced as hard as we could, and it showed.”
St. Laurence (2-5) got on the board in the fourth when Alex Flisk (17 of 31, 229 yards, interception) found Andrew Javorka for a 35-yard touchdown.
