Jack Diechl threw a pair of touchdown passes as Libertyville downed host Zion-Benton 21-10 Thursday to improve to 4-3 and move within one victory of a playoff berth in Randy Kuceyeski’s final season as head coach.

Diechl connected with Justin Guarnacio for a 20-yard score and with Max Ebert on a 44-yard score on a screen pass.

Libertyville also scored on Ed Pike’s 22-yard run.

Zion scored first on a 26-yard field goal by Hannah Magiera.

But it was 21-3 before the Bees tallied a late score on a 52-yard pass from Chris Williams to Carlton Reynolds.

Libertyville (2-2 in the NSC Lake) plays Warren (3-5 overall, 2-1 in the NSC Lake) next week and finishes with Lake Forest.

This was Diechl’s second start under center, and he was effective at managing the game.

“We have two solid quarterbacks (Hutch Herchenbach is the other),” said Kuceyeski. “Jack had a really nice game tonight. He continues to get better each week. We had a couple turnovers tonight that we need to clean up.

“We made a lot of great plays tonight. We need a lot of positive plays this week if we’re going to pick up our fifth win and make the playoffs.”
