Petty leads Glenbrook North to win

Updated: October 6, 2011 11:31PM

A hard hit late in the fourth quarter caused Glenbrook North quarterback Curt Petty to bite through part of his tongue.

With his team already shorthanded, the senior shook off that injury to help the Spartans earn a 21-14 win Thursday night against visiting Central Suburban North rival Maine West.

After spitting out some blood on the sidelines, Petty directed a 70-yard drive that ended with Jason Scholl’s one-yard touchdown plunge with 29 seconds left.

The quarterback started that march with three straight completions to Ethan Schmidt then connected with Tommy Senft on a 31-yard pass. From there, he handed the ball off three times to Scholl.

A few seconds later, Scholl made an interception to clinch the win for Glenbrook North (3-4, 2-1) and keep its playoff hopes alive heading into next week’s matchup with Highland Park.

“I knew I couldn’t let my teammates down. I know they would do the same for me,” said Petty, who threw for 197 yards.

The Spartans needed that final drive after a strong effort from winless Maine West (0-7, 0-3). The Warriors used drives of 12 and 16 plays to tie the game twice. The latter took nearly 10 minutes and ended when a scrambling Jake Korbecki connected with Alex Pierce on a four-yard pass with 6:01 left in the game.

Korbecki also scored on a eight-yard keeper in the second quarter after Trevor Ponticelli gave Glenbrook North the early lead on a 55-yard reception.

Ponticelli (six catches, 128 yards) also had a 37-yard catch in the third quarter to set up Kyle Chin’s three-yard scoring run.
